THE PREDICTION
Vasek Pospisil went the long way around beating Ukrainian qualifier Illya Marchenko but the Canadian rallied well to take a close deciding tiebreak into the round of 16. He will face Jan-Lennard Struff, who received a bye to this stage as the world number 36 and fourth seed at this tournament, with the players tied at 1-1 in their head-to-head record. However, Pospisil and Struff have not met each other since 2016 and so their previous matches are negligible as evidence here. Four years on, Pospisil is an experienced tour ever-present with the penchant for occasional big upsets but also the capacity to falter physically, whereas Struff reached his top gear last year and looks to be nearing that form again in a disrupted 2020. The German came close to beating Stefanos Tsitsipas in late October but lost convincingly to Pablo Carreno Busta the week after. However, the German number one will be favourite to win this match as the higher-ranked player and yesterday’s three-set match will have taken a lot out of the Canadian’s legs. It could go to three sets but Struff should honour his seeding with a win.
