THE PREDICTION
Richard Gasquet quieted the mini storm brewing around Marin Cilic’s first-round conqueror Jonas Forejtek with a commanding straight-sets victory over the Czech youngster. However, the French veteran will now face another big Sofia Open story when he faces Salvatore Caruso for the first time as the Italian comes off a career-win over world number 21 Felix Auger-Aliassime in just two sets. Caruso has been threatening a match like this for some time on tour with wins over Tennys Sandgren, Laslo Djere and competitive losses to Dan Evans and Guido Pella since the re-start of the tennis season but to take out the second seed here is an incredible achievement for the world number 82. Caruso is a battler, perhaps spurred on this season by the influx of Italian talent into the Top 100 on tour, and he will certainly challenge Gasquet here with the potential for a set. In the grand scheme, at this late stage of the season, Caruso has a real chance of carrying his momentum through Gasquet in this quarter-final but experience has to be backed, realistically. It could go down to the wire but Gasquet will not underestimate Caruso after yesterday’s events and the 34-year-old should reach the semi-finals.
