World number 74 Vasek Pospisil is a red herring at such a low ranking with defeats of Milos Raonic and Roberto Bautista Agut at the US Open and more recently an impressive straight-sets victory over compatriot Felix Auger-Aliassime to prove it. The Canadian is an excellent player to watch on his day and if he can start well at this tournament he should grow into Sofia with a real shot at a deep run. He will face Illya Marchenko for the first time in six years, where a career-high world number 25 Pospisil beat the Ukrainian in straight-sets at the Atlanta Open. Lucky loser Marchenko should suffer a pretty convincing loss in straight-sets to the 30-year-old in this first round tie and we will get to see the shape Pospisil is in as a measure for the tournament.
