THE PREDICTION
This will be Taro Daniel’s second tour-level match since the re-start of the tennis season with the Japanese player seeming to just about find some form in time for the Sofia Open after a dismal autumn. The world number 115 won a Challenger in Hamburg last week and did not drop a set in the qualifiers here to make it through to the main draw. The same can be said for his opponent, Aslan Karatsev, ranked just one place higher at world number 114 and the holder of two recent Challenger titles. The Russian enjoyed a big career-win when he knocked out Tennys Sandgren at the St. Petersburg Open in September and he took a set off Karen Khachanov in the next round before losing in three. That tour-level winning experience could see him over the line in this match-up but it looks set to be an endurance race between the pair. Karatsev in three sets seems a good additional option in the markets.
