THE PREDICTION
Daniil Medvedev took just over an hour to end the Paris Masters campaign of Diego Schwartzman as he beat the Argentine for a fourth time to reach the semi-finals. As much as the Russian was tuned-in from the off, Schwartzman’s mind seemed to be elsewhere in their short quarter-final and he would have been more competitive, perhaps, without the ATP Finals qualification looming overhead. Nonetheless, world number five Medvedev will face Milos Raonic for a third time, having beaten the Canadian on both previous meetings in two hard-court quarter-finals. It is testament to Milos Raonic’s quarter-final opponent, Ugo Humbert, that Raonic’s three-set victory over the young Frenchman came as quite the shock. However, the 29-year-old played superbly both at the beginning and end of the two-hours-plus match, including saving match point in the third set tiebreak with a 30-shot rally that will make it onto plenty of highlights reels. The Canadian is a former finalist here and his 35 aces against Humbert should put some trepidation in Daniil Medvedev, if the Russian was capable of such an emotion. The 24-year-old is growing into this tournament and will wear the confidence of a 2-0 head-to-head record over Raonic well in what should be a three-set encounter but, knowing the brutality of the Russian, could well fall his way in two.
