THE PREDICTION
World number 20 Stan Wawrinka faced off a big challenge from the USA’s Tommy Paul on Wednesday night and will have to recover in time for this even harder test against Andrey Rublev. The Swiss lost the first set to Pauls before negotiating his way through a mammoth second-set via a tiebreak to claim the late momentum and whilst he will be elated by the win, a long second-round match is the last thing he needs. He will play 2020’s form player. Andrey Rublev, in the last match slated for Thursday and will need all the energy he can muster to get past the powerful Russian. Wawrinka shares a 1-1 head-to-head record with Rublev but this is negligible considering he beat a teenage Rublev back in 2016 and the Russian’s straight-sets victory at last year’s Cincinnati Open is a better litmus test. It speaks volumes to what Rublev is doing right now that Stan Wawrinka beating him would be an upset but the 23-year-old is in startling form and should make the most of Wawrinka’s extended court time by beating the Swiss in straight sets.
