- The pressure is mounting for the 28-year-old as he knows he is just one match away from qualifying for the year-ending ATP Finals in London with Pablo Carreno Busta the only man that can usurp him now.
- Schwartzman has never beaten his next opponent Daniil Medvedev in three previous matches, including in the quarter-finals at Queen’s last year and back at the beginning of this year at the ATP Cup.

There is plenty riding on this match for Diego Schwartzman if he is to qualify for the ATP Finals off his own racket, although he is all-but secure now after Matteo Berrettini’s exit as Pablo Carreno Busta would need to win the Paris Masters to usurp him. History is not on Schwartzman’s side against Medvedev, who leads their head-to-head record 3-0, but the Argentine came back from the suspension of the tennis season a changed man and has reached two finals out of his last three tournaments, the other being an incredible run to the semi-finals of Roland-Garros. In as much as Daniil Medvedev has not faced this version of Diego Schwartzman, the Russian still has the edge over his opponent in playstyles as he will look to take time away from the diminutive Argentine and his returning has been near its best this week. Medvedev’s test against Alex de Minaur in the previous round should serve him well here too as a warning but there is a real determination to Schwartzman that suggests this match will go to a decider before a winner is found. On recent form, Schwartzman just edges this contest but with the ATP Finals qualification so close it feels like Medvedev can pounce on any potential nerves to come through this in three.
