THE PREDICTION
World number 20 Stan Wawrinka’s defeat of the most in-form tennis player this season, Andrey Rublev, is an incredible achievement considering the Swiss came back from a set down to do so. The Russian was on an 11-match winning streak and has only lost seven times all year but Wawrinka managed to turn the tables on the powerful world number eight and roll back the years. That makes it two long three-set matches in a row for Wawrinka, both going on late into the previous two nights and that intensity may start to tell on the 35-year-old as has done so before in the latter years of his career. He will face a player he has not yet beaten in Alexander Zverev, who came through a well-contested and lengthy match with often-fought foe Adrian Mannarino to beat the Frenchman for the third time this season. Zverev is on a 10-match unbeaten streak himself after winning back-to-back ATP titles in Cologne and leads Wawrinka 3-0 in their head-to-head, including a four-set victory at this year’s Australian Open. It will be interesting to see which player will break this spell over Zverev but the German looks more focused than ever since his loss at the US Open final and he is likely to make it through this tough contest with Wawrinka the longer the match takes.
There is no reason to discount the Swiss surprising Zverev in two sets, but it seems more feasible that the German will wear his opponent down over three gruelling sets to come through.
