Slovakia’s Norbert Gombos announced himself in Paris yesterday when he beat Marco Cecchinato in straight-sets and the 30-year-old ha snow beaten three worthy foes, including Pablo Cuevas and Radu Albot in the qualifiers. Normally this match-up with the world number 14 David Goffin would be a simple prediction, however, for a well-fought straight-sets defeat but Goffin’s form has been worrisome since the restart of the tennis season. The 29-year-old is on a three-match losing streak since he reached the round of 16 at the US Open and he will hope that taking a break last week has broken that mentality. It is hard to go against the Belgian here and he should indeed come through but this could be one of the upsets of the day and may well go to three sets.
