DANIIL MEDVEDEV
- Daniil Medvedev moved up to world number four after his victory over his opponent here, Alexander Zverev, at the Paris Masters last weekend.
- The 24-year-old extended an excellent Masters record, with three to his name now in just over a year and who know how many more he could have won in a full 2020 season.
- The Russian looked to be nearing the best of his game at the Paris Masters just in time for his second ATP Finals campaign, after last year’s edition came too late for him to be able to maintain his world-beating form.
ALEXANDER ZVEREV
- World number seven Alexander Zverev will have the opportunity for immediate revenge after losing from a set up to Daniil Medvedev in the Paris Masters final last Sunday.
- The German number one has enjoyed some excellent form in the latter stages of this disrupted year, winning back-to-back titles in Cologne after reaching his first Grand Slam final at the US Open.
- The 23-year-old turned agonising defeat into determination after his US Open defeat to go on a 12-match winning streak, until he was stopped by Medvedev, and he certainly thrives indoors, where both of his titles were won this season.
THE PREDICTION
This match should see fireworks between Daniil Medvedev and Alexander Zverev as an immediate rematch of the Paris Masters final. On that occasion Alexander Zverev battled to a close first set before Medvedev turned the screw, physically and mentally, which is something plenty of the Russian’s opponents fall foul of. Despite that loss, Zverev still holds the lead in their 5-2 head-to-head record and is a difficult player to beat indoors – just ask Rafael Nadal who lost to the German in straight sets in Paris and at last year’s ATP Finals. Champion in 2018, Zverev has what it takes to go all the way again here if he can stay focused. However, with a lot of background pressure surrounding the German and the recent loss to Medvedev, he should come off the worse in this one. Medvedev got better with every game at the Paris Masters after some middling late-season form and if he arrives fully tuned-in to London he could well be the man to beat at these finals. Medvedev got in Zverev’s head last weekend and it has been too soon for the German to forget him, especially as Medvedev is not the kind to hold back when he’s up. It could go to three again but it seems likelier the Russian can dominate this in straight sets.
