St. George Illawarra Dragons vs Cronulla Sharks prediction

The St George Illawarra Dragons (11th) are coming off a stunning 18-12 upset over the ladder-leading Canberra Raiders, snapping a four-game losing streak in the process.

The Sharks (7th) have won four of their last five, including a dominant 32-12 victory over the North Queensland Cowboys in Round 22. They led 26-0 at the half time break and look for them to start quickly again in this one.

The Dragons have named a largely unchanged side to the one who did the business against Canberra, relying on the experienced spine of Clinton Gutherson, Kyle Flanagan, and Damien Cook.

Dragons winger Tyrell Sloan has been a shining light for the Dragons this season, crossing for 15 tries, making him one of the competition's most dangerous finishers. His defence has caused him to drift in and out of the side however his attacking powers mean he gets another chance this week.

Head Coach Craig Fitzgibbon and his Sharks make one change with Toby Rudolf back on the bench after concussion and Jesse Colquhoun dropping out of the squad.

This local derby has been dominated by Cronulla in recent times. The Sharks have won 31 of the 55 clashes since 1998, with the Dragons winning 23 and one game drawn .

The Dragons will be full of confidence after beating Canberra, but backing it up against a clinical Sharks side is the challenge. In a local derby where passion often outweighs form, an upset is possible, but the Sharks possess more consistent attacking threats and should get the points in this one.
