ATLANTA FALCONS
- Atlanta produced arguably the shock performance and result of the season as the 1-7 team defeated the previously 7-1 New Orleans to pick up just their second victory of the season thanks largely to a superb defensive effort.
- The Falcons suffered a big injury blow last week as chief RB Devonta Freeman picked up a foot sprain and will miss a couple of games and he will be joined on the sidelines by tight end Austin Hooper who looks set to miss a month with an MCL sprain.
- Those are two huge parts of Atlanta’s offense and they may struggle to move the chains without them but that will become an even bigger issue if quarterback Matt Ryan fails to overcome the foot injury that forced him to sit out Wednesday’s practice.
CAROLINA PANTHERS
- Carolina were edged out in difficult conditions against Green Bay and will hope a return to home field will benefit them here but they will have to be wary of an upset against an Atlanta team that produced a superb result last week.
- Panthers QB Kyle Allen set a career-high for passing yards against the Packers but will need to be more careful with the ball as turnovers proved to be an issue last week and stopped Carolina from having a real shot at winning.
- The Panthers had seven players unable to practice on Wednesday and they will be desperate to see that number decrease as the week progresses with running back Christian McCaffrey the most notable name on the list with a foot injury.
THE PREDICTION
Atlanta pulled out their best performance of the season by a long way as they shocked New Orleans to move to 2-7. They may struggle this week without two key members of their offense in running back Devonta Freeman and tight end Austin Hooper and with quarterback Matt Ryan also in some doubt, it will be a tall order to repeat last week’s feat. Carolina are still in with a good chance of making the play-offs and a victory here should put them right back into the mix.
