JONATHAN MARTINEZ VS ADRIAN YANEZ LOWDOWN

When Jonathan Martinez (18-4) got starched by Davey Grant (2021) to go 4-3 in the UFC, he looked destined to become another talented fighter who’s lack of consistency would prevent him from making it to the top. However, he is putting everything together after sticking to featherweight and he has strung five solid wins together including a TKO over Cub Swanson (2022) crippling his leg with kicks and a classy unanimous decision over Said Nurmagomedov back in March this year.

Adrian Yanez (16-4) has displayed the maturity of a veteran since joining the UFC winning his first five fights impressively only to get humbled in his last outing. He got his account up and running with three superb knockouts over Victor Rodriguez (2020), Gustavo Lopez (2021) and Randy Costa (2021). He then earnt a hard-fought split decision over Grant (2021) before notching up his 10th knockout over Tony Kelly (2022) collecting his fifth performance bonus in the process. However, he then ran into Rob Font back in April at UFC 287, receiving a taste of his own medicine and getting knocked out in the first round.

JONATHAN MARTINEZ VS ADRIAN YANEZ PREDICTION

This has got ‘Fight of the Night’ written all over it and should be an exciting, technical battle on the feet. Martinez has more strings to his bow with his grappling and is likely to have to call upon it and Yanez has some of the best boxing in the division.

Expect Martinez to open up with his leg kicks attempting to chop Yanez down. He will just need to land a few clean to slow him down, but he will be corked and ready to counter. Martinez has the power to hurt Yanez, but if he decides to stand and trade for three rounds, it will be a matter of of time before Yanez gets a read on him and begins to pick him apart with his hands.

Martinez will need to mix in his grappling, but we have not seen enough of his wrestling to put him in a dominant position. Yanez has brilliant takedown defence and we can see Martinez giving up early at the least and resorting to hail Mary’s which will play right into Yanez’s hands.

Font’s knockout is likely to provide a valuable lesson and we can see Yanez earning one back if Martinez’s durability is not able to drag this out.

Prediction: Yanez via Decision

Value bet: Yanez via KO/TKO
