GILBERT BURNS VS JACK DELLA MADDALENA LOWDOWN
Gilbert Burns (22-6) returns after three fights last year. He went into 2023 off the back of that war with Khamzat Chimaev where he fell on the wrong side of a unanimous decision. He responded with a ruthless submission over Neil Magny and attritional unanimous decision over Jorge Masvidal. However, he then got outclassed by Belal Muhammad who earnt a vintage unanimous decision of his own.
Jack Della Maddalena (16-2) makes the long flight for the biggest fight of his career. He was making UFC life look easy when he knocked out his first three durable opponents in the first round. He then submitted Randy Brown (2023) and then had to work hard for a split decision over Bassil Hafez (2023). He then took on Kevin Holland (2023) and picked up his biggest win with another split decision.
GILBERT BURNS VS JACK DELLA MADDALENA PREDICTION
They are both well-rounded, but their strengths are so elite that this could become a classic striker vs grappler match-up. Burns has some of the best jiu-jitsu in the division and Maddalena has some of the best boxing.
Maddalena’s hands are as crisp as it gets with power to match his output. He will get behind his jab and look to set up big shots to the liver and dome. However, he will not be able to land anything tied up in the clinch or off his back.
Burns is a quality striker himself, but he knows he has to avoid the Aussie’s weapons by closing the distance and dragging the fight to the floor. So, this is likely to come down to Burns’ wrestling and we feel Maddalena’s takedown defence is good enough to create enough space to inflict the fight-winning damage with his hands.
Prediction: Maddalena via Decision
Value bet: Burns to win
