CAPTAIN COMPARISON

Steve Stricker and Padraig Harrington will do battle at Whistling Straits with both taking charge of their respective teams in their maiden Ryder Cup as captains. Stricker has the task of leading his side in their bid to reclaim the trophy having lost out back in 2018. Harrington on the other hand will be hoping that the European side can retain the trophy that he won four times as a player from his six appearances.

54-year-old Stricker is a 12-time winner on the PGA Tour with one win on the European Tour thrown in for good measure, while he has also added seven titles on the PGA Champions Tour. He appeared in the Ryder Cup three times from 2008 to 2012, helping his team to win the trophy on one occasion on his rookie appearance. However, it was the following event where he enjoyed his best performance although it turned out to be in vain. Stricker won three points from a possible four in 2010, tied as the best American alongside Tiger Woods. Those three points came from wins but they turned out to be his only wins in his three appearances as he managed to total just 3.5 points from his 11 matches. While this is his first chance to lead the American team at the Ryder Cup, it is not his first captaincy role having guided the USA to victory in the Presidents Cup back in 2017.

50-year-old Harrington is still in better shape as a player, sitting 124 places higher on the world rankings, and he will hope that greater involvement with his team on the Tour can prove to be beneficial. The Irishman is a three-time major champion while he has 21 titles to his name in total, six of which came on the PGA Tour while the other 15 were earned on the European Tour. He also enjoyed a solid playing career in the Ryder Cup having played 25 matches in his six appearances spanning from 1999 to 2010. Harrington finished with a 9-13-3 record, totalling 10.5 points with his greatest effort coming in 2004 when he finished the week with four wins and just a solitary loss.

Both men will have plenty of support with each naming five vice-captains for the event. Stricker will call upon the services of Phil Mickelson, Zach Johnson, Fred Couples, Davis Love III and his predecessor, Jim Furyk. Davis Love III will offer plenty of insight having captained the United States in 2012 and 2016, leading his team to the win in the latter event. Harrington on the other hand will have a much less experienced crew on board with Luke Donald, Martin Kaymer, Graeme McDowell, Henrik Stenson and Robert Karlsson taking the roles as Europe’s vice-captains.
