Türkiye have ended a 24-year hiatus from the global stage and make a third tournament appearance in 2026
The Turks’ memorable run in 2002 marks a high point in the nation’s football history. At the tournament contested in Japan and Korea Republic, Türkiye reached the semi-finals, narrowly missing out on a place in the trophy decider following a 1-0 defeat to Brazil, who went on to claim a record-extending fifth title. However, Hakan Şükür and Co bounced back to record a 3-2 victory over Korea Republic in the play-off for third place.
Türkiye qualified for the 2026 finals thanks to 1-0 victories over Romania and Kosovo in the UEFA play‑offs, having finished second behind Spain in their qualifying group.
