Japan will be contesting their eighth successive FIFA World Cup™ having been ever-present since their debut at France 1998.
The Samurai Blue became the first Asian team to qualify for the 2026 finals and the first team of any continent to qualify outside of host nations on 20 March 2025 with a 2-0 win over Bahrain in Saitama that saw them guaranteed a top two finish in Group C in the third round of AFC qualifying.
The Japanese reached the round of 16 for the fourth time in 2022 following a pair of dramatic come-from-behind wins against former FIFA World Cup™ winners Germany and Spain in the group stage. Their quest for a first appearance in the quarter-finals eventually ended with a penalty shoot-out defeat against Croatia in the round of 16.
Japan have scored a remarkable total of 112 goals in their last two World Cup qualifying campaigns. They netted 54 times in the 2026 preliminaries and 58 times in the qualifiers for Qatar 2022.
