VALENCIA
Off-field issues with supporter unrest at the ownership has accompanied on-pitch performances to decline significantly at one of Spain’s major historical clubs; Valencia. Last season, they narrowly avoided relegation on the final day of the season after a well-timed run of form towards the end of the campaign.
This time around, they were and are expected to be in another relegation battle down at the bottom of La Liga. The home team won their opening two matches of the 2023/24 campaign but have since managed just a further two victories in nine matches as they sit firmly in the middle-of-the-table ahead of this weekend’s round of fixtures.
GRANADA
After their relegation to the second-tier in 2022, Granada were underperforming at the start of last season in the Segunda so decided to sack former Middlesbrough manager, Aitor Karanka. He was replaced by the more progressive style of football of Paco Lopez and the Andalusians ended up gaining promotion back to the top-flight as champions.
In their opening 11 matches of this season, Granada have managed just one victory and they sit firmly in the bottom three and the relegation places. The Andalusians have been very entertaining to watch, though, with those 11 games producing 45 goals with their most recent outing being a 3-2 defeat at home to Villarreal.

Whilst the name of Valencia consistently struggling would indicate major signs of underperformance; the systematic dismantling of the club and the playing staff means that the actual performances of the players are level with what the results have served up in recent years. They will know this is a great opportunity, though, to get a fifth win in just 12 matches which will be vital come the end of the campaign. They will attack a Granada side that have proved entertaining both in attack and defence so a high-scoring encounter at Mestalla is to be expected.
