It has been a couple of seasons of underperformance for Sevilla, despite winning the UEFA Europa League. Onto their fourth manager in just over 12 months, it has been a stifled start to Diego Alonso’s reign in the Andalusian capital with their average form continuing in midweek as they were beaten 2-0 by Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium.
Sevilla have drawn their last four La Liga matches and are languishing in the bottom-half of the table, just above the bottom three and the relegation places. They have managed three wins in 17 matches across all competitions so far this season but have been relatively entertaining with an average of three goals per game coming in their 11 Liga matches.
REAL BETIS
Financial concerns in La Liga are well known and no ‘big club’ has dealt with those ramifications as head on as Real Betis but still they continue to challenge for European qualification. Manuel Pellegrini’s side begin this math day sitting just inside the top six and coming into this on the back of some excellent form.
Their 4-1 hammering of Cypriot side Aris Limassol in the group stages of the UEFA Europa League in midweek means that they are now unbeaten in their last 11 matches across all competitions, in a run that stretches back to a narrow but surprising 1-0 defeat to Rangers in their opening European game of the campaign in mid-September.

‘The frying pan of Spain’ is Seville and Andalusia with ‘El Gran Derbi’ between Sevilla and Real Betis arguably the fiercest rivalry in European football, let alone just Spanish football. Sevilla, after a relegation battle last year, are once again underperforming and pressure is just beginning to grow a little on Diego Alonso. Real Betis consistently overperform their general budget, despite having one of the best and biggest fanbases in the country. This one is always worth watching and with two genuinely proactive managers in the dugout, it could actually be quite an entertaining derby, combined with the likely hysterics and theatrics.
