THE LOWDOWN

REAL MADRID

It has been a very bizarre season for Real Madrid. After the loss of club captain Karim Benzema to Al Ittihad, failed pursuit of Kylian Mbappe and continued speculation over the future of Carlo Ancelotti; Los Blancos have suffered just one defeat in 14 matches across all competitions and have been quite fortuitous.

Their newest ‘galactico’, Jude Bellingham, scored a late brace to help Madrid come from behind to defeat Barcelona in Barcelona in the Clasico last weekend. He has now scored 13 goals across all competitions so far this season in 13 appearances. His goals have been decisive, often masking some fairly below par performances.

RAYO VALLECANO

Over the summer, Rayo Vallecano looked set to be heading towards a crisis. The off-field running of the club has always been something of a controversy but they then lost their manager, Andoni Iraola, as well as key players such as Fran Garcia, Alejandro Catena and Santi Comesana during the transfer window.

Despite those departures, and the fairly unconvincing appointment of Francisco, Rayo Vallecano begin this weekend’s round of fixtures sitting in the top-half of the table. They have suffered just two defeats in their opening 11 matches and shared a 2-2 draw at home to Real Sociedad, last weekend.

THE PREDICTION

Real Madrid will be favourites for pretty much every game they play in La Liga; especially at home to the likes of Rayo Vallecano. Their schedule is congested with an upcoming UEFA Champions League match against Braga at the Bernabeu so could rotate and take their foot off the gas. If they do that then Rayo will go to the home of Los Blancos and attack with several attacking options more than capable of notching. Madrid are firm favourites but it could be quite entertaining on Sunday evening.
