THE LOWDOWN
BARCELONA
Reigning Spanish champions, Barcelona, are probably in a position where they ‘accidentally’ on the league title ahead of schedule last season. It can never be said that the Blaugrana are not in a position to win La Liga and the bare minimum expectation is that they challenge for the title. Performances, though, had to improve with a resurgent Real Madrid and Atletico Madrid.
In their opening ten matches of the 2023/24 campaign, they have managed seven victories with three draws and remain the only unbeaten side in the division. Despite that, they begin this weekend’s round of fixtures with two draws in their last four matches against Granada and Real Mallorca.
REAL MADRID
Heading into the season, Real Madrid were under a cloud of uncertainty with captain Karim Benzema departing, manager Carlo Ancelotti and his future unknown and missing out on the signing of Kylian Mbappe. They signed their latest ‘Galactico’, Jude Bellingham, though, and he has been instrumental for Los Blancos so far this season.
After ten matches, they sit at the top-of-the-table with eight victories, a draw and a defeat with their only loss being a 3-1 defeat in the derby against Atletico Madrid in the Metropolitano. They come into the Clasico on the back of a 2-1 victory away to Sporting Braga in the group stages of the UEFA Champions League.
