THE LOWDOWN
BARCELONA
Barcelona, under the management of former captain Xavi, won the Spanish title last season but would have had to be much-improved this season with their performances never overly convincing and the likes of Real Madrid and Atletico Madrid inevitably set to improve. There have been flashes of genuine all conquering brilliance from Barca but only flashes.
They come into this on the back of a 1-0 loss to Shakhtar Donetsk in the UEFA Champions League in midweek, continuing some relatively dodgy form whereby they have managed three wins, two defeats and a draw in their last six matches across all competitions. Injuries have hurt them but there is a general lack of cohesion.
ALAVES
Following promotion to the top-flight via the playoffs last season, Deportivo Alaves were always expected too struggle in the 2023/24 La Liga campaign and that has been the case for the Basque club. Coached by Luis Garcia Plaza, the determined and dogged northerners sit in the bottom-half set for a relegation battle.
They did earn a pivotal but edgy 1-0 win over bottom-of-the-table Almeria last weekend, following up a 10-0 win over Deportivo Murcia in the Copa del Rey, but that was just their third win of the Liga campaign. Their most recent win before that came in early September and they have been generally floundering ever since.
THE TEAM NEWS

PREDICTED XI (4-2-3-1): Sivera; Gorosabel, Abqar, Duarte, Lopez; Blanco, Guevara; Hagi, Guridi, Rioja; Kike

THE PREDICTION
Defending champions Barcelona are losing ground on the top-of-the-table and have begun to drift away from Girona and Real Madrid, dropping points in a third of their games so far this season. However, games like this should be the bread and butter against a newly-promoted struggler that, albeit off the back of a much-needed win against rock-bottom and winless Almeria, have performed really poorly throughout the campaign. Barca are firm favourites, albeit it could be a game they simply just aim to ‘get through’ rather than focus on any style.
BETTING TIP: BARCELONA TO WIN & UNDER 3.5 GOALS
