THE LOWDOWN

VITORIA GUIMARAES

In the summer of 2022, Vitoria lost senior players such as Andre Almeida, Oscar Estupinan, Rochinha, Ricardo Quaresma and Marcus Edwards as well as manager, Pepa. Despite all of that, they have achieved back-to-back UEFA Europa Conference League qualifications but been knocked out in the early qualifying rounds of both of those competitions.

Now, though, they come into this on the back of a 3-1 win away to Moncarapachense in their most recent outing in the third round of the Taca de Portugal. They are unbeaten in their last four matches and are challenging, once again, towards the top end of the table. They have remained low-scoring, though, with just 12 in eight.

CHAVES

Coached by former Vitoria manager, Moreno, who departed the Guimaraes-based club at the end of last season, Chaves come into this looking to build on a mid-table finish from last season that saw them push towards the European places. A season of backing that up, though, has been quite underwhelming.

The visitors come into this on the back of a penalty shootout defeat to Canelas 2010 in the third round of the Taca de Portugal after a goalless draw. They had collected seven points from three matches in the build-up to that – which are their first seven points of the season after five successive defeats to start with.

THE PREDICTION

These two sides begin the weekend’s round of fixtures sitting at opposite ends of the table with Vitoria sitting just five places off the top-of-the-table and Chaves five places off the bottom. The hosts have suffered just two defeats in their opening eight matches, whilst the away team are beginning to improve and will remain a tough team to beat. Given the form of the visitors, a draw would appear the likeliest outcome for this one.
