THE LOWDOWN

SPORTING LISBON

In 2021, Sporting CP regained the Portuguese title for the first time in 20 years with their manager, Ruben Amorim, becoming one of the most sought after, exciting young coaches in European football. They have declined since then with Amorim’s stock falling and missing out on UEFA Champions League qualification last season.

However, after nine matches of the 2023/24 Primeira Liga campaign, Sporting begin this weekend’s round of fixtures sitting at the top-of-the-table with eight victories and a draw so far this season. They come into this on the back of an impressive 4-2 defeat of newly-promoted Farense in the group stages of the Taca da Liga in midweek.

ESTRELA DA AMADORA

After the merger of two clubs, Clube Desportivo Estrela and Club Sintra Football, in 2020; Estrela da Amadora have risen to the top-flight of Portuguese football for the first time in their history with two promotions in their last three seasons. Under the management of Sergio Vieira, they were and remain expected to battle against the drop.

However, as was the case with Casa Pia last season, the Primeira Liga rookies have shown that they can be competitive at the top level. They sit in mid-table with three victories and two draws in their opening nine matches, scoring just nine goals in the process. They come into this one on the back of three successive victories across all competitions.

ESTRELA DA AMADORA

Estrela da Amadora will be without the injured Bruno Brigido but, bar his absence, will be able to choose from a fully fit and available squad.

PREDICTED XI (3-4-2-1): Filipe; Omurwa, Lopes, Gaspar; Santos, Aloisio, Vito, Mansur; Jaba, Ronald; Kikas

UNAVAILABLE: Brigido (Injured)

QUESTIONABLE:

THE PREDICTION

This one, on paper, would appear a foregone conclusion but the form of the visitors and their general stubbornness and competitiveness has meant they can trust themselves to give Sporting a game at the Jose Alvalade. The home team have conceded just seven goals in nine matches, whilst Estrela have just nine in nine. So whilst the visitors may be able to limit their opposition, it is unlikely that they cause Sporting too many problems on Sunday evening.

BETTING TIP: SPORTING CP TO WIN & UNDER 3.5 GOALS
