THE LOWDOWN

GIL VICENTE

Last season, Gil Vicente finished 13th in the Portuguese Primeira Liga, which was a very underwhelming campaign after finishing in the European spots the season before. Over the summer, they appointed Vitor Campelos, who had impressively led Chaves to promotion and then a top-half finish in two seasons in charge.

Despite his appointment promising positive things, the home team begin this weekend’s round of fixtures sitting firmly in the middle-of-the-table with three victories and five defeats in their opening eight matches. Two of those wins have come in their last four matches with 33 goals coming in those eight games so far.

SPORTING BRAGA

Last season, in the summer of 2022, Carlos Carvalhal departed Sporting Braga after a successful and impressive stint in charge. He was replaced by Artur Jorge and, fairly remarkably, Sporting Braga improved and managed to break up ‘Os Tres Grandes’ (‘The Big Three’) by finishing in the top three and qualifying for the UEFA Champions League.

They reached the group stages and come into this on the back of a 2-1 defeat at home to Real Madrid, the other day. They have managed three successive Primeira Liga victories as they try and challenge for European qualification and they begin this weekend’s round of fixtures sitting in the top four.

THE PREDICTION

Sporting Braga’s style of football is relentless and attacking throughout the match and they do it with significant intensity that has allowed them to become one of the most entertaining teams to watch in European football. Their eight matches so far this season have consisted of 34 goals, with Gil Vicente’s racking up 33 so far so another high-scoring encounter between these two seems likely for this one.
