THE LOWDOWN

BENFICA

Last season, across all competitions, Benfica were very impressive with Roger Schmidt leading them to the UEFA Champions League quarter-finals and their first Primeira Liga title in three years. The Lisbon club have an impressive squad, despite the recent losses of Goncalo Ramos and Enzo Fernandez, but will be disappointed with their start in Europe.

They were beaten by Boavista on the opening day of the season but they have managed an impressive run of seven successive wins. Their 1-0 defeat to Real Sociedad, though, was their third defeat in a row in their UEFA Champions League group stage. They did hammer Lusitania by four goals to one in the Taca de Portugal third round.

CASA PIA

In 2022, Casa Pia gained promotion to the top-flight for the first time ever under the management of Filipe Martins. They managed, with an impressive defensive record, to finish comfortably in the middle-of-the-table and they had also spent a large chunk of time pushing towards the European spots.

This time around, ‘second season syndrome’ is something that could also impact upon them but they have started by currently sitting firmly in mid-table this time around. They have managed two wins in their opening eight matches but come into this one on the back of back-to-back defeats against Gil Vicente and Estrela da Amadora.

THE PREDICTION

Benfica have not been as thrilling or as repeatedly dominant as they were last season but they are, by far, the better side against a poor team. The home team are challenging again at the top-of-the-table among ‘Os Tres Grandes’, alongside Sporting CP and Porto. Casa Pia have remained low-scoring with just 14 goals in their eight games so far. Benfica are overwhelming favourites, especially at the Estadio da Luz, but a lower scoring game would seem likely as the visitors seek to limit their opposition.

BETTING TIP: BENFICA TO WIN & UNDER 3.5 GOALS
