THE LOWDOWN
VERONA
Ahead of the 2022/23 Serie A season, regulations were changed so that teams who were level on points in meaningful positions would be forced to play a one-off match against each other to determine the outcome of the season. Verona avoided relegation by defeating Spezia in that playoff, despite finishing below them in the regular season on goal difference.
Hellas Verona come into this on the back of a 1-0 defeat away to Juventus in their most recent outing, last weekend, suffering a 96th minute winner. The home team have managed just two victories in their opening ten matches as they begin the weekend’s round of fixtures sitting just outside of the bottom three and the relegation places.
MONZA
The death of Silvio Berlusconi could well have impacted upon Monza more than any other club with the former AC Milan owner so heavily involved in their rise to Serie A promotion for the first time ever in 2022. They remain an ambitious club and will be seeking to eye up a tilt at a top seven finish and potential European qualification.
The visitors started the 2023/24 season really slowly with a Coppa Italia defeat at home to Reggiana in the first round before just one victory in their opening six matches of the Serie A campaign. Since that run, though, they have steadied the ship and begin this weekend’s round of fixtures sitting firmly in the middle-of-the-table.
THE TEAM NEWS
VERONA
Hellas Verona have a couple of injury doubts for this weekend with both defender Juan Cabal and winger Jayden Braaf.
PREDICTED XI (3-4-1-2): Montipo; Magnani, Dawidowicz, Terracciano; Faraoni, Folorunsho, Hongla, Doig; Duda; Bonazzoli, Duric
UNAVAILABLE:
QUESTIONABLE: Braaf (Injured), Cabal (Injured)
MONZA
Monza are without the suspended Papu Gomez and also defender Gianluca Caprari, due to injury. Fellow defender, Armando Izzo, is also a doubt.
PREDICTED XI (3-4-2-1): Di Gregorio; Caldirola, Mari, Carboni; Ciurria, Gagliardini, Pessina, Kyriakopoulos; Colpani, Vignato; Colombo
UNAVAILABLE: Gomez (Suspended), Caprari (Injured)
QUESTIONABLE: Izzo (Injured)
THE PREDICTION
These are two sides that would have expected to battle against relegation throughout the 2023/24 campaign and that is very much the case in these early stages. Hellas Verona are winless in eight matches since they began with back-to-back victories and they have managed to score just six goals in that time. They now face a Monza side that, despite their improvement in recent weeks, have scored just nine of their own as they sit in mid-table. This is likely to be a fairly low quality and low-scoring affair.
