THE LOWDOWN

CAGLIARI

Last season, Cagliari gained promotion back to the top-flight at the first attempt after their relegation in 2022. The Sardinians defeated Bari over two legs in the end of season Serie B playoffs and, under the management of Claudio Ranieri, began this season as one of the favourites to go back down to the second-tier.

The home team come into this on the back of a dreadful start to the season with no victories and just three points collected in their opening nine matches. However, last weekend, they managed a dramatic 4-3 win over Frosinone in a game whereby they were 3-0 down with over 20 minutes to go. They followed that up with a Coppa Italia victory over Udinese in midweek.

GENOA

Mid-way through last season, Genoa lost their manager Alexander Blessin to Belgian Jupiler Pro League side Royale Union Saint-Gilloise. He was replaced by 2006 Italy FIFA World Cup winner, Alberto Gilardino. They gained promotion as Serie B winners and then invested heavily in the summer with the arrivals of the likes of Ruslan Malinovskiy and Mateo Retegui.

Genoa managed a 2-1 victory over Reggiana in their most recent outing in the second round of the Coppa Italia in midweek. They are in the bottom-half of the table with just three victories in their ten matches so far this season, having scored just 11 goals which is an underwhelming return after their aforementioned summer investment.

THE TEAM NEWS

CAGLIARI

Cagliari are without four injured players for this one with the likes of Simone Aresti, Marko Rog and Nahitan Nandez all unavailable for this one.

PREDICTED XI (3-4-2-1): Scuffet; Hatzidiakos, Goldaniga, Dossena, Augello; Makoumbou, Prati, Deiola; Jankto, Luvumbo; Mancosu

UNAVAILABLE: Di Pardo (Injured), Nandez (Injured), Aresti (Injured), Rog (Injured)

QUESTIONABLE:

GENOA

The visitors will be without the likes of Mateo Retegui, due to injury, as well as the suspended Mattia Bani. Junior Messias also remains doubtful.

PREDICTED XI (3-5-2): Martinez; Dragusin, De Winter, Vasquez; Sabelli, Malinovskiy, Badelj, Frendrup, Caricol; Gudmundsson, Ekuban

UNAVAILABLE: Bani (Suspended), Retegui (Injured), Jagiello (Injured)

QUESTIONABLE: Messias (Injured)

THE PREDICTION

These are two newly-promoted sides that have underperformed their expectations to different levels and to different extents. Genoa believed they would be able to mount a push for a top-half finish in what is quite an open middle-of-the-table in Italy’s top-flight. Cagliari, on the other hand, would have expected to win before the final weekend of October – especially not being the worst defensive team in the league under the style and tactics of Ranieri. It could be quite an entertaining encounter with two teams thrashing it out.
