THE LOWDOWN

BOLOGNA

It has been a remarkably impressive campaign from Bologna with former AC Milan and Paris Saint-Germain midfielder Thiago Motta producing a genuinely effective and easy on the eye side that is punching well above its weight. They sit tucked inside the top four or five and the UEFA Champions League qualifying spots.

With UEFA Champions League qualification appearing inevitable, there was and is a danger that Bologna’s season could fade away but they come into this one on the back of a very impressive performance and result. Bologna went to Stadio Olimpico and hammered Roma by three goals to one last week.

UDINESE

In midweek, Udinese took the decision to part company with former Crawley Town manager Gabriele Cioffi, who was already the Friulians’ second manager of the season after the sacking of Andrea Sottil, and they have appointed 2006 FIFA World Cup winning captain and 2006 Ballon d’Or winner Fabio Cannavaro.

In Cannavaro’s first game in charge of the visitors, Udinese played their rearranged game against Roma in midweek. They suffered a 2-1 defeat at home to Roma with Roberto Pereyra giving Udinese a first-half lead before Romelu Lukaku scored an equaliser and then Bryan Cristante notched a stoppage-time winner.

THE TEAM NEWS

BOLOGNA

Key man Scotland international Lewis Ferguson is missing with a recent ACL injury, whilst Adama Soumaoro is also unavailable. Jens Odgaard is missing with a hamstring injury.

PREDICTED XI (4-1-4-1): Skorupski; Posch, Beukema, Lucumi, Calafiori; Ndoye, El Azzouzi, Aebischer, Saelemaekers; Zirkzee

UNAVAILABLE: Ferguson (Injured), Odgaard (Injured), Soumaoro (Injured)

QUESTIONABLE:

UDINESE

Both Vivaldo and Festy Ebosele are doubtful for this weekend, whilst the likes of Enzo Ebozze, Sandi Lovric and Florian Thauvin are also unavailable for Udinese.

PREDICTED XI (3-4-2-1): Okoye; Perez, Bijol, Kristensen; Ehizibue, Walace, Payero, Kamara; Samardzic, Pereyra; Lucca

UNAVAILABLE: Giannetti (Injured), Thauvin (Injured), Lovric (Injured), Ebosse (Injured)

QUESTIONABLE: Vivaldo (Injured), Ebosele (Injured)

THE PREDICTION

We have one that could well be a one-sided affair at the Renato Dell’Ara. Bologna have been excellent this season but there is a danger that an injury to Lewis Ferguson and the expected sale of Joshua Zirkzee this summer as well as Thiago Motta combined for a poor end to the campaign. If last week is anything to go by, though, this one should not really be a contest against a struggling Udinese side that did show some improvement and fight against Roma in Cannavaro’s first game but Bologna, especially with home advantage, are the team to back.

TIP: BOLOGNA TO WIN
