THE LOWDOWN

BOLOGNA

Former Internazionale and Italy international midfielder Thiago Motta has performed very impressively in charge of Bologna as they begin this weekend’s round of fixtures sitting tucked inside the top four and the UEFA Champions League qualifying spots, albeit it is likely that the top five in Italy will qualify for Europe’s elite level club competition this season.

They come into this one on the back of yet another victory a couple of weeks ago before the March international break as they defeated Empoli by a goal to nil in Florence thanks to a 94th minute winning goal from midfielder Giovanni Fabbian. That means they have now won seven of their last eight matches in the league.

SALERNITANA

It has been a miserable campaign for Salernitana. There are a few teams dotted across the continent, such as Sheffield United in England or Almeria in Spain, that are more or less awaiting their fate of relegation to be mathematically confirmed and Salernitana fall into that category, beginning this weekend’s round of fixtures sitting 11 points adrift of safety.

Stefano Colantuono is their fourth manager of the campaign after the sackings of Paulo Sousa, Filippo Inzaghi and then Fabio Liverani last month. Salernitana come into this one on the back of a 1-0 defeat at home to Lecce as they inch closer to a return to Serie B with just two victories in their 29 matches so far this season.

SALERNITANA

There are two injury concerns for Salernitana this weekend as Nicolo Pierozzi is unavailable for this one, whilst midfielder Grigoris Kastanos is also missing.

PREDICTED XI (4-1-2-1-2): Costil; Gyomber, Manolas, Pirola, Bradaric; Maggiore; Coulibaly, Basic; Candreva; Tchaouna, Weissman

UNAVAILABLE: Kastanos (Injured), Pierozzi (Injured)

THE PREDICTION

This one is expected to be a very one-sided affair at the Renato Dall’Ara. Bologna are overwhelming favourites to comfortably defeat one of the very worst sides in Europe’s big five leagues. They are coached by one of the most promising young managers on the continent in Thiago Motta and have an abundance of vibrant, attacking talent. A comfortable and potentially heavy home win is to be expected on Sunday afternoon.

TIP: BOLOGNA TO WIN -1 HANDICAP
