Augsburg’s recent unbeaten run came to an untimely end last time out at the hands of Hoffenheim, who defeated them 3-1 in Sinsheim. The visitors could never recover from going 2-0 within the opening 20 minutes and despite pulling a goal back just after the hour mark, conceded again late on to seal Hoffenheim’s win, who now move level on points with Augsburg. Still in seventh-place, three points here would see Augsburg move to within three of sixth-placed Eintracht Frankfurt, but failure to win could see them overtaken by both Hoffenheim and Freiburg by the conclusion of the weekend.
UNION BERLIN
Union Berlin’s season is fast petering out, but after nightmare first half of the campaign domestically which saw them fighting down the bottom end of the table, the visitors are unlikely to be hugely disappointed about their current position in 13th-place, six points above the relegation play-off place.
