Hertha’s midweek win saw Koln drop back to second from bottom, but just one point separates them and the three teams above them in what is an increasingly tense relegation fight in the Bundesliga. The Billy Goats go into this one on the back of two successive wins and if they do beat the drop, the short-term appointment of Friedhelm Funkel as coach until the end of the season will have been a masterstroke. Freiburg, meanwhile, have little to play for in the remaining games, with Thursday’s 3-0 defeat at Hertha all but ending their hopes of a European spot. It was also their fourth straight loss on the road and they could well be in for a fifth against rejuvenated and battling Koln.
