WOLFSBURG
- Wolfsburg consolidated their place in the final European spot thanks to a narrow success over Werder Bremen last week but they cannot afford to slip-up against one of the teams in the chasing pack as they host Freiburg in a crucial contest.
- Wolfsburg looked as though they would be left frustrated in their efforts to claim all three points from their trip to Bremen until Wout Weghorst found the back of the net with just eight minutes remaining to seal the victory.
- Renato Steffen will make an immediate return to the starting XI after serving a suspension but Wolfsburg have suffered a blow with the news that Admir Mehmedi is unavailable because of an Achilles injury.
FREIBURG
- Freiburg were without a win following the resumption of the Bundesliga but they were able to put that four-match run to bed as they claimed a slender victory against Borussia Monchengladbach last Friday to remain in the hunt for sixth spot.
- After finally ending his goalscoring drought in Freiburg’s game against Eintracht Frankfurt, Nils Petersen came from the bench to score for the second time in three matches with that effort proving to be the decisive effort as Gladbach failed to respond when going down to 10 men soon after the goal.
- Petersen will hope he can force his way into the starting line-up following his recent efforts while Freiburg look to have a relatively clean bill of health with Yoric Ravet the only confirmed absentee for this contest.
THE PREDICTION
The race for the top six is tight but the picture could become much
clearer after this game between Wolfsburg and Freiburg. Wolfsburg
currently occupy sixth place and come into this game with a four-point
advantage over Freiburg and a win for the hosts would almost certainly
rule the visitors out of the running for the place in the Europa League.
With plenty to play for, this is likely to be a nervy contest and with
neither side frequently scoring more than once in their respective home
and away fixtures, this should be a game with few goals.
