- Freiburg squeezed out an extra-time win at third-division Magdeburg in the cup last Saturday as they begin their eighth season under long-serving coach Christian Streich, who continues to get the best out of limited resources.
- Streich has added Korean wingers Jeong Woo-Yeong and Kwon Chang-Hoon to his squad - although the latter is out injured - along with full-backs Luca Itter and Jonathan Schmid.
- Streich already has a lengthy injury list to deal with so there are unlikely to be many changes from the side that started against Magdeburg, though Jeong could play from the start this time.

- Like their opponents, Mainz stayed comfortably clear of the relegation places last season but they began the new campaign with a 2-0 defeat to local rivals Kaiserslautern in the cup last Saturday.
- Centre-back Stefan Bell has been ruled out for three months after suffering an ankle injury at Kaiserslautern so new signing Jeremiah St. Juste is set to make his Bundesliga debut.
- Strikers Jean-Philippe Mateta, Ji Dong-Won and Aaron Seydel are all unavailable due to injury so Liverpool loanee Taiwo Awoniyi will be hoping to make his debut having arrived last week.
