THE LOWDOWN

PSG

Paris Saint-Germain won the French title, once again, last season but have had a lot of churn over the summer with the final departures of Neymar and Lionel Messi. The Parisians have brought in some interesting additions as they change to a new model, under the management of Luis Enrique with the arrivals of Ousmane Dembele and Randal Kolo Muani.

They come into this on the back of a 3-2 defeat away to Stade Brest with a late winner from PSG forward, Kylian Mbappe. They have managed four successive victories across all competitions since their 4-1 loss to Newcastle United in the UEFA Champions League, last month. They are slowly creeping towards overthrowing Nice at the top-of-the-table.

MONTPELLIER

The reduction of Ligue 1 from 20 to 18 teams means the teams that often finish in the middle-of-the-table are now far more likely be drawn into a fight down at the bottom with the relegation battle. Montpellier are indeed one of those teams and the start to their season has been along the lines of that with relative underperformance.

Armenian coach, Michel Der Zakarian, has led Montpellier to three victories, three draws and three defeats as they begin the weekend’s round of fixtures sitting in the bottom-half of the table. Their most recent outing, a 3-0 hammering of Toulouse, means that they have suffered just one loss in their last five matches.

THE PREDICTION

The start of this season has been peppered by consistently poor performances from Paris Saint-Germain, limited in attack and occasionally too open and weak at the back. However, after their hammering by Newcastle, they have very much grown into this season and face a Montpellier side that, albeit in some steady form themselves, are sitting in the bottom-half of the table with few expectations to move up the table. A heavy and comfortable PSG victory is expected at Parc des Princes.
