THE LOWDOWN

METZ

Metz gained promotion on the final day of the Ligue 2 season in controversial circumstances and were always expected to struggle in Ligue 1, especially with the league being reduced in size from 20 to 18 teams. They begin this weekend’s round of fixtures sitting third from bottom in the relegation playoff place.

The home team come into this one on the back of a 1-1 draw away to bottom-of-the-table and winless Olympique Lyonnais in their most recent outing, last weekend. That does mean they are now winless in their last six matches, having actually begun the campaign quite steadily but have since declined.

NANTES

Under the management of Pierre Aristouy, the 2022 Coupe de France winners and 2023 Coupe de France runners’ up Nantes started this season slowly and, having just about staved off relegation last year, were tipped for another battle. However, some impressive form through September and October saw them leap into the top-half.

Having said that, though, they now come into this one on the back of back-to-back defeats. The visitors’ last outing was a 1-0 defeat at home to in-form and high-flying Stade de Reims, which had been preceded by a 4-0 thrashing at the hands of an in-form Lens side at the end of October, halting Nantes’ progress.

THE TEAM NEWS

METZ

Newly-prompted Metz will be without the likes of Habib Maiga, Aboubacar Lo and Oscar Estupinan for the visit of Nantes for this weekend.

PREDICTED XI (4-2-3-1): Oukidja; Colin, Traore, Herelle, Udol; Jacques, Camara; Van Den Kerkhof, Jallow, Asoro; Elisor

UNAVAILABLE: Estupinan (Injured), Lo (Injured), Maiga (Injured)

QUESTIONABLE:

NANTES

Nantes have a few injury concerns but they have no fresh injuries or suspension issues so they are the unchanged side for this weekend against Metz.

PREDICTED XI (3-4-2-1): Lafont; Castelletto, Cumart, Pallois; Coco, Chirivella, Moutoussamy, Merlin; Adson, Simon; Mohamed

UNAVAILABLE: Duverne (Injured), Augusto (Injured), Centonze (Injured)

THE PREDICTION

Ahead of the 2023/24 Ligue 1 campaign, it wouldn’t have been a mad suggestion to put these two teams involved in a relegation battle, given one is newly-promoted and the other struggled so badly last year. However, after 11 matches of the campaign, only one of those sides is proving that hypothesis to be correct. Metz are languishing down in the relegation playoff place ahead of this one with two victories in their 11 games so far this season. Nantes, on the other hand, are trying to launch themselves to the European spots after a slow start and a Nantes victory, therefore, is the likeliest outcome for this one.

BETTING TIP: NANTES TO WIN
