Chaos would be a bit of an understatement to describe the goings on at Olympique Lyonnais so far this season. The John Textor-owned club have seemingly been neglected over the summer with former manager, Laurent Blanc, adamant he should be sacked before eventually being sacked as France’s crisis club live up to their off-field issues on the pitch.
Last weekend, their manager Fabio Grosso was injured and team bus attacked ahead of their game against Marseille being postponed. Lyon have so far this season failed to win a single game in Ligue 1 and sit rock-bottom. They have collected three points with six defeats in their opening nine matches, losing 2-1 at home to fellow strugglers Clermont a couple of weeks ago.
METZ
Under the management of Hungarian coach Laszlo Boloni, Metz gained automatic promotion back to the top-flight of French football ahead of Girondins de Bordeaux last season in fairly controversial circumstances. They were and are expected to be involved in a relegation battle throughout the 2023/24 Ligue 1 campaign.
The visitors come into this on the back of a goalless draw at home to Le Havre, who gained promotion alongside them last season. Metz are winless in their last six matches and begin the weekend’s round of fixtures sitting third from bottom in the relegation playoff place, six points above Lyon.

Olympique Lyonnais have had an absolutely miserable few months and start to the campaign, both on and off the field. They were one of two winless teams until Clermont came and won at Parc OL so another defeat to a fellow struggler in Metz could well be a sign that this season is not just miserable but genuinely seismic and possibly one in which France loses one of its absolute biggest clubs from the top-flight. However, especially with home advantage, they should finally get over the line with a victory in this one.
