THE LOWDOWN

EVERTON

  • After a 2-0 defeat at the London Stadium against West Ham United a couple of weeks ago, Frank Lampard was sacked by Everton. He was replaced by Sean Dyche at the start of this week, a day after selling Anthony Gordon to Newcastle and a day before The Toffees tried but failed to bring anyone in on the final day of the transfer window.
  • Dyche has stated that defenders Ben Godfrey and Michael Keane are both close to returns while in terms of formation it would be no surprise to see the former Burnley boss opt for his favoured 4-4-2 set-up.

ARSENAL

  • Mikel Arteta returns to Goodison Park with his Arsenal side sitting at the top-of-the-table and with the opportunity to go eight points clear before Manchester City go to Tottenham on Sunday afternoon. The Gunners could give new signing Jorginho a debut, after his deadline day switch from Chelsea this week.
  • Thomas Partey is doubtful to feature but Arteta will give him every chance of inclusion, with new signing Jorginho waiting in the wings for a potential Gunners debut.

THE TEAM NEWS

ARSENAL

PREDICTED XI (4-3-3): Ramsdale; White, Saliba, Gabriel, Zinchenko; Odegaard, Partey, Xhaka; Saka, Nketiah, Martinelli

THE PREDICTION

A person that believes in the ‘narrative’ and that life, and the Premier League by consequence, is somehow scripted, might think the home team could nick this one. A raucous atmosphere getting behind a new man in charge with off-field protests distracting the side as they fight for their Premier League status: it might just be set up for a dramatic Dyche win in his opening match. However, this would seem scripted for a reason and that reason is its detachment from reality. Everton are a bad side that play incompetent football and are run in an incompetent manner. Dyche will improve that aspect on the pitch and they will be a lot more difficult to beat but it is likely to take longer than four full days as boss. Arsenal are a very good side that play controlling, almost suffocating football in a sophisticated and complex but cohesive manner. The Gunners will be cool and confident of victory and they will be confident of snuffing out any of the early Goodison roar.

TIP: ARSENAL TO WIN TO NIL
