THE TEAM NEWS

FLAMENGO

  • Flamengo have been nearly unstoppable in the league this season and they remain at the top with a sizable 10-point lead over Palmeiras. They are currently riding an impressive 18-game undefeated streak in all competitions (W15, D3) and have won each of their last five Serie A league matches – scoring 10 times and conceding just twice over that span. They are coming off a 2-0 home win over Fluminense in their most recent Serie A encounter and an emphatic 5-0 win over Gremio in the Copa Libertadores in midweek.
  • Pablo Marí and Piris da Motta are both suspended for this match, Lucas Silva has been listed as doubtful due to a thigh injury, while Orlando Berrio continues miss out. Diego Ribas, who recently returned from a long-term absence, could see playing time here.

Expected starting XI: Diego Alves; João Lucas, Thuler, Rodrigo Caio, Rene; Willian Arão; Lincoln, Diego Ribas, Vitinho; Gabigol, Reinier

CSA

  • CSA are coming off a 2-1 away loss at Botafogo last time out, and that result extended the side’s three-game winless run in the league. Their recent away form has been poor as they are riding a four-game winless streak on the road – conceding 11 goals over that period and are winless in their last six away Serie A matches (D1, L5).
  • CSA should be heavily depleted ahead of this contest as Amaral, Alexander Cajuru, Hector Bustamante, Naldo, Jordi and Jean Cleber have all been ruled out through injury while Joao Vitor is suspended.

Expected starting XI: João Carlos; Celsinho, Luciano Castán, Alan Costa, Carlinhos; Dawhan, Nilton, Jonatan Goméz; Warley, Apodi, Ricardo Bueno.

THE PREDICTION

There is no question Flamengo are the better side ahead of this game – on paper, in the league standings and based on the recent form. If we also include CSA’s away struggles into the mix, where they have conceded 11 goals in their last four road Serie A matches, and their long list of absentees, then Flamengo could well pick up another big win and rack up plenty more goals here with only complacency their main threat.
