THE LOWDOWN

UNION SAINT-GILLOISE

Each season, Royale Union Saint-Gilloise lose key players but each season, thanks to their affiliation with Brighton and Hove Albion so shared recruitment expertise, they replace and, more often than not, improve. They lost Victor Boniface over the summer but have, once again, improved in this campaign.

The Brussels-based club begin this weekend’s round of fixtures sitting at the top-of-the-table. They come into this on the back of a 2-1 win over Meux in the Round of 32 of the cup in midweek and they have now enjoyed five successive victories across all competitions. Their one loss in their last ten matches came in the UEFA Europa League against Liverpool.

CLUB BRUGGE

Club Brugge won the Belgian title in 2022 and then reached the UEFA Champions League knockout stages in fairly bizarre circumstances last season. However, the defence of their title was shoddy and they required four different managers throughout the campaign. Things seemed to have finally turned under Ronny Deila but they are regressing again.

The visitors began the season in electric form, scoring goals at will and dominating their opposition. However, their much-needed 2-1 defeat of defending champions Antwerp last weekend was needed to end a five-match winless run of form in the league. They remain a very strong and enterprising, attacking team, though.

THE TEAM NEWS

UNION SAINT-GILLOISE

Union SG will be able to name an unchanged eleven for this weekend’s encounter with the only unavailable player being Victor Nilsson as they take on Club Brugge.

PREDICTED XI (3-5-2): Moris; Sykes, Burgess, Machida; Castro-Montes, Vanhoutte, Sadiki, Puertas, Lapoussin; Rasmussen, Eckert

UNAVAILABLE: Nilsson (Injured)

QUESTIONABLE:

CLUB BRUGGE

Club Brugge have no definite absentees and no fresh injury concerns or suspension issues so they will be able to name an unchanged side for this one.

PREDICTED XI (4-3-1-2): Mignolet; Buchanan, Mechele, Spileers, Meijer; Nielsen, Vanaken, Onyedika; Skov Olsen; Jutgla, Zinckernagel

UNAVAILABLE:

QUESTIONABLE: Vermant (Injured), Sabbe (Injured), Talbi (Injured), Bursik (Injured)

THE PREDICTION

Despite indifferent form over the course of the last month or so, Club Brugge remain one of the strongest teams in Belgium, alongside their upcoming opponents. The home team have been fabulous in all departments so far this season but 29 goals scored in 11 games showcases their attacking capabilities. Only Union SG have scored more than Club Brygge so far this season so regardless of the match, it is expected to be an entertaining encounter.
