THE LOWDOWN

SPORTING CHARLEROI

Mid-way through last season, Sporting Charleroi returned to their previous manager and appointed Felice Mazzu. After a successful stint at Royale Union Saint-Gilloise but then a very poor time at Anderlecht, Mazzu did not have an immediate impact at Charleroi and that carried over into the early stages of the 2023/24 campaign.

The home team failed to win any of their opening seven matches as they languished down at the bottom end of the table. However, they have won three of their last five matches as they try and climb towards the middle. They do come into this one, though, on the back of a 2-0 loss away to struggling Eupen, last weekend.

GENT

For much of last year, Gent were in the top four of the Belgian Jupiler Pro League and destined to finish in the end of season championship round playoffs. However, on the final day of the season, they missed out to defending champions Club Brugge on the top four. They did manage to keep the likes of Gift Orban and Hugo Cuypers over the summer.

Under the management of Hein Vanhaezebrouck, Gent have started this season in very good form. In their opening 22 matches across all competitions, they have suffered just one defeat and are trying to hang on to the pace set by the likes of Royale Union Saint-Gilloise and Anderlecht at the top-of-the-table.

THE TEAM NEWS

SPORTING CHARLEROI

Felice Mazzu has no fresh injury concerns or suspension issues so will be able to name an unchanged eleven for this weekend’s visit of Gent.

PREDICTED XI (3-4-3): Koffi; Knezevic, Marcq, Andreou; Rogelj, Morioka, Ilaimaharitra, Dragsnes; Guiagon, Stulic, Zorgane

UNAVAILABLE:

QUESTIONABLE: Tshiend (Injured), Benbouali (Injured)

GENT

Laurent Depoitre remains unavailable for Gent but there is nothing new to concern Hein Vanhaezebrouck so they can be unchanged as they face Charleroi.

PREDICTED XI (3-4-2-1): Roef; Kandouss, Watanabe, Torunarigha; Samoise, Kums, De Sart, Brown; Tissoudali, Hong; Cuypers

UNAVAILABLE: Depoitre (Injured)

QUESTIONABLE: Nardi (Injured)

THE PREDICTION

Sporting Charleroi are badly struggling in terms of their relative pre-season expectations. Any sort of decline or stagnation from a mid-table side in Belgium would have always meant the risk of being relegated is more likely and that is very much the case. They have improved but remain just outside of the bottom four. Gent find it difficult to lose this season, it appears. One defeat in 23 matches makes it difficult to see how they are beaten by Charleroi; regardless of the hosts’ recent improvement.

BETTING TIP: GENT TO WIN
