THE LOWDOWN

EUPEN

For the vast majority of last season, Eupen were battling against relegation and only narrowly avoided finishing in the bottom four and the relegation round playoff places. However, they appointed former Wolfsburg boss, Florian Kohfeldt, and began the 2023/24 campaign in much better form than how they finished the 2022/23 season.

They started the season with three victories, a draw and a defeat in their opening five matches. Since then, though, they have suffered six successive losses and begin the weekend’s round of fixtures sitting firmly in the bottom four. Their most recent outing was a 4-1 hammering at the hands of Royale Union Saint-Gilloise.

SPORTING CHARLEROI

Mid-way through last season, Sporting Charleroi re-appointed their former manager, Felice Mazzu, as they struggled down at the bottom end of the season. The former Union SG and Anderlecht boss was quite underwhelming in his second stint with Charleroi as they languished in mid-table and they are expected to struggle.

The visitors’ coach was under pressure after a very slow start to the season but their 3-2 win at home to Royal Antwerp in their most recent outing, last weekend, made it three victories in their last four matches as they slowly climb up the table. They had been winless in their opening seven matches.

THE TEAM NEWS

EUPEN

Eupen have a couple of certain absentees, such as the injured Regan Charles-Cook and suspended Nathan Bitumazala, but they also have some doubts, too, for this one.

PREDICTED XI (5-4-1): Slonina; Magnee, Paeshuyse, Palsson, Kral, Van Genechten; Baiye, Keita, Mohwald, Pantovic; Nuhu

UNAVAILABLE: Bitumazala (Suspended), Charles-Cook (Injured)

QUESTIONABLE: Lambert (Injured), Alloh (Injured), Bialek (Injured)

SPORTING CHARLEROI

Antoine Bernier, Ken Nkuba Tshiend and Nadhir Benboauli are all potentially unavailable for this weekend’s visit to Eupen this weekend.

PREDICTED XI (3-4-2-1): Koffi; Knezevic, Marcq, Andreou; Rogelj, Morioka, Ilaimaharitra, Dragsnes; Guiagon, Mbenza; Stulic

UNAVAILABLE:

QUESTIONABLE: Bernier (Injured), Tshiend (Injured), Benbouali (Injured)

THE PREDICTION

These are two sides on very different trajectories, Eupen are on an endless slide down to what appears to be rock-bottom. That had nearly been the case last season and was pre-season expectation. They take on a Charleroi side that are finally improving with Mazzu hoping to take the momentum into this game. Given the form of the two sides, backing in favour of the visitors is of good value.

BETTING TIP: DOUBLE CHANCE – SPORTING CHARLEROI TO WIN OR DRAW
