THE LOWDOWN

EQUATORIAL GUINEA

In 2012, Equatorial Guinea played in their first ever Africa Cup of Nations, qualifying as hosts. They reached the quarter-finals of that tournament and then reached the semi-finals as hosts in 2015. 2021 was the first time they qualified without being the host nation and they reached the last eight that time, too.

So, despite only a few AFCON performances, Equatorial Guinea have built up a relatively successful history. They now, under the management of Juan Micha, have proven themselves to be a threat once again after a more than respectable 1-1 draw with a star studded Nigerian side in their opening encounter on Sunday afternoon.

GUINEA-BISSAU

Under the management of Baciro Cande, Guinea-Bissau are competing at their fourth successive Africa Cup of Nations having never qualified for the tournament until 2017. However, in their three campaigns so far, they have collected just three points from nine group games and they are still yet to win a match.

The ‘Djurtus’ began the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations by being beaten 2-0 by host nation Ivory Coast in the opening game of the tournament. They went into the competition on the back of a 6-2 defeat to Mali in their final warm-up game before Seko Fofana and Jean-Philippe Krasso scored Ivory Coast’s two goals on Saturday afternoon.

THE TEAM NEWS

EQUATORIAL GUINEA

Juan Micha did not suffer from any withdrawals before the tournament began and his Equatorial Guinea also came through their opening game against Nigeria unscathed in terms of injuries so they will be able to name an unchanged side for this one.

PREDICTED XI (4-2-3-1): Owono; Akapo, Orozco, Coco, Ndong; Bikoro, Ganet; Salvador, Machin, Buyla; Nsue

QUESTIONABLE:

GUINEA-BISSAU

Guinea-Bissau’s biggest selection dilemma and frustration came before the tournament when Vitoria goalkeeper Celton Biai decided to stay with his club and focus on the Portuguese Primeira Liga. They are able to name an unchanged side for this one if Baciro Cande prefers.

PREDICTED XI (4-3-3): Ojoco; Encada, Sangante, Djalo, Cande; Cassama, Semedo, Bikel; Rodrigues, Balde, Mane

THE PREDICTION

Equatorial Guinea’s draw with Nigeria means they could well have opened up the draw for themselves to really put the pressure on both the Nigerians and Ivorians. With at least one of those teams dropping points against each other after this game, Equatorial Guinea have an excellent opportunity to inch towards the knockout stages. They face a Guinea-Bissau side that are arguably among the weakest in the competition and an Equatorial Guinea victory would appear most likely for this one.

TIP: EQUATORIAL GUINEA TO WIN
