THE LOWDOWN

EGYPT

Seven-time African champions Egypt are aiming to once again challenge for the Africa Cup of Nations title. The Pharaohs won three successive AFCON titles between 2006 and 2010 before failing to qualify in 2012, 2013 and 2015. They have returned to the main stage by finishing as runners’ up in two of the last three, too, continuing their bizarre results.

Now, under the management of former Spartak Moscow boss Rui Vitoria, they appear slightly weaker than they have done in the last half a decade or so. The Egyptians began this year’s competition by rescuing a point against Mozambique in a 2-2 draw with a 97th minute equalising penalty from Mohamed Salah.

GHANA

Prior to the 2022 FIFA World Cup, then Technical Director Chris Hughton was instrumental in something of a recruitment drive as Ghana tried to get players to commit to their national team. The former Brighton and Hove Albion manager took charge after their group stage exit from that competition and it has been fairly miserable ever since.

Both performances and results have been more than underwhelming for the Ghanaians in the last 12 months and that continued in their opening game of this competition as they were surprisingly beaten 2-1 by Cabo Verde on Sunday. They have won just one game, a slender 1-0 defeat of Madagascar, in their last six matches.

THE TEAM NEWS

EGYPT

Rui Vitoria had to deal with the pre-tournament injury withdrawals of defender Osama Galal and midfielder Ahmed Nabil Koita and Mohamad Hany was substituted in their opener against Mozambique with an injury, too.

PREDICTED XI (4-3-3): El Shenawy; Gabr, Hegazi, Abdelmonem, Hamdy; Elneny, Fathy, Zizo; Salah, Mohamed, Trezeguet

UNAVAILABLE: Hany (Injured)

QUESTIONABLE:

GHANA

In their opening match, Ghana came through unscathed in terms of injuries so could name an unchanged lineup for this one but The Black Stars will be keen on getting the likes of Inaki Williams and Andre Ayew into their starting eleven for this second game.

PREDICTED XI (4-2-3-1): Ofori; Odoi, Djiku, Salisu, Mensah; Ashimeru, Baba; Williams, A.Ayew, J.Ayew; Semenyo

THE PREDICTION

On paper, this is one between two of the heavyweights on the African continent but both have underwhelmed in their opening match. Egypt needed drama just to earn a point against Mozambique but they did at least extend their strong run of form to just one loss in their last 15 matches. They now face a Ghanaian side that have not just underwhelmed in their opener but have struggled for any sort of form during Chris Hughton’s reign in charge so an Egyptian victory is to be expected for this one.

TIP: EGYPT TO WIN
