THE LOWDOWN

AUSTRALIA WOMEN

  • Reigning champions Australia are back in the Women’s T20 World Cup final, although India pushed them all the way in Newlands, the Aussies eventually scraping through by just five runs.
  • This match is the seventh consecutive women’s T20 World Cup final that Australia will be competing in dating back to 2010, having won five of their last six.

SOUTH AFRICA WOMEN

  • South Africa stunned England this past Friday and made history in the process, becoming the first South African cricket side (men or women) to reach a major ICC tournament final.
  • Shabnim Ismail clocked up one of the fastest overs seen in women’s cricket, Ayabonga Khaka took four wickets and Tazmin Brits struck 68 in a 96-run opening partnership with Laura Wolvaardt, this was a performance full of key contributions as the Proteas held their nerve to sneak home by six runs.

THE PREDICTION

South Africa’s fairy-tale triumph over one of the powerhouses of women’s cricket in England will have served as a massive shot in the arm for women’s sport in the country and now the entire nation will be watching as David aims to slay the Goliath that is Australia. The support generated inside a packed Newlands no doubt played a big part in the Proteas’ semi-final success and it won’t be a comfortable environment for Australia to play in. However, Meg Lanning’s side are among the toughest, fiercest and most successful in world sport and the last time they faced South Africa in the group stage, Australia won by six wickets. The question really is how much the tournament hosts have left in the tank following that semi-final victory. It does feel in a way like that was their final and it will be so hard to replicate such a performance here. Ultimately, Australia should simply prove too good, too ruthless and too experienced in the rigours of playing such a big match, so back them to record a sixth women’s T20 World Cup triumph.
