THE TEAM NEWS

OMAN

  • Oman fell short against Sri Lanka this past Thursday, although they can take heart from their performance, which saw them match the tourists for significant periods of the match, giving them a platform to build upon here.
  • Medium-paced bowler Kaleemullah was particularly impressive with a wicket and just 18 runs conceded from his four overs, whilst the middle order showed a strong spine despite ultimately failing to reach their target, with numbers five, six and eight all accruing scores of over 20 runs.
  • Despite defeat, it would be no surprise if Oman were to retain the same team for this second T20i when taking into account all the positives they will have taken from Thursday’s game.

SRI LANKA

  • Sri Lanka came out on top in the first T20i between these two sides, accruing a score of 162/4 before restricting Oman to 143/8 after an early spate of wickets left the hosts with too much to do.
  • Following a poor start to the Sri Lankan innings, Avishka Fernando led a fantastic recovery with an unbeaten 83, whilst he was well supported by wicketkeeper Dasun Shanaka, who blasted 51 not out from just 24 deliveries.
  • With this being just a two-match series, Sri Lanka like Oman are not expected to make any chances as they look to continue this momentum and remain without Dushmantha Chameera and Wanindu Hasaranga due to their IPL commitments.

THE PREDICTION

Whilst Sri Lanka were not the victims of an upset in the first T20i, Oman proved that they have the capabilities to really trouble the visiting side and another intriguing contest could be on the cards. After Sri Lanka’s top three batters all failed last time out with two of them falling for golden ducks, a significant improvement is expected from the tourists in the powerplay. Having not played Oman before, it is likely that the lack of knowledge regarding their opponents perhaps played a big part in Sri Lanka struggling in periods of the first T20i. However, the expectation is that this will be rectified in this second encounter and that Sri Lanka should ultimately come out on top once again.
