Although the Proteas fought hard with the ball, reducing Australia to 72/5 and 113/7 respectively, they failed to land the killer blow and the tourists took full advantage, eventually winning by three wickets and extending South Africa’s losing streak across these white ball contests.

Australia were indebted to Marnus Labuschagne for getting them out of jail and almost single-handedly dragging them over the line in the first ODI. Substituted in at number eight as a concussion replacement for Cameron Green, Labuschagne arrived at the crease with his side 72/5 but played a magnificent hand, scoring 80 not out to guide his side home. He was excellently supported by Ashton Agar, who struck an unbeaten 48.
THE PREDICTION
No matter how much they appeared in trouble, Australia found a way to win on Thursday and it’s been the story of their tour so far. They have been magnificent when it comes to run chases, reaching their target no matter what the score or the match situation and the first ODI was a clear example of how to ride out pressure and play calmly to secure victory. It will have psychologically hurt South Africa to lose the last game after having put themselves in such a strong position, which may not bode well moving forward.
