THE LOWDOWN
ENGLAND
England’s bowling are under pressure and need to improve as a matter of urgency. To only take two wickets in the first ODI after losing six themselves is a poor effort and a score of 291 with the bat proved not to be anywhere near enough. Four England players racked up scores of 50 or more, but nobody went on to get that hundred, which was a huge factor in the context of the game, with two Black Caps batters going on to score centuries in the run chase.
NEW ZEALAND
New Zealand made it three consecutive wins against England in all formats after comfortably chasing down 292 with eight wickets and 4.2 overs remaining. It was a resounding triumph for a team expected to struggle against the world champions, but who have done far more than just hold their own. Devon Conway and Daryl Mitchell both struck unbeaten centuries, whilst putting together a partnership worth 180, totally blunting the England bowling attack. The question now is whether they can back that up.
THE PREDICTION
Surely a big response is on the cards from England after the out of sorts showing last Friday. Their batters have no problem accumulating runs and the question is whether this time they will go on and turn those half-centuries into centuries. If they do, then the hosts will be in with a strong chance of getting back on the winning trail. New Zealand are in good form and if the likes of Conway or Mitchell are allowed to bed in again here, then it won’t bode well for England. But the home side are resilient and you’d expect the bowlers to sharpen up at the Ageas Bowl. Consider backing England to level the series.
