THE LOWDOWN
ENGLAND
We saw England both at their best and at their worst over the course of the four-match T20i series, storming into a 2-0 lead before throwing it away after being comprehensively beaten across the remaining two games. The big news heading into this ODI series is that batter Harry Brook has been added to the squad late-on, giving the Yorkshire star a chance to show why he should be a last-minute addition to England’s Cricket World Cup squad.
NEW ZEALAND
New Zealand are the side brimming with momentum after staging an outstanding come back in the prior T20i series. Coming back from 2-0 down to salvage a 2-2 draw away to an opponent as formidable as England deserves huge credit and they’ll be hoping to use this as a springboard in these ODIs. Tom Latham captains the side, whilst fast bowler Trent Boult is likely to be included.
THE PREDICTION
For England, there is far more at stake in this match compared to New Zealand. Numerous batters are holding onto their respective World Cup squad places by the skin of their teeth with Brook now banging on the door following that shocking omission. Whether that has a positive effect on their performance remains to be seen, but they started like a train in the T20i series and it would be no surprise to see the same in these ODIs, starting in Cardiff as New Zealand adapt to the change in format and potentially a couple of adjustments in regards to personnel. Back a home victory to begin with.
BETTING TIP: ENGLAND TO WIN
