THE LOWDOWN
SYDNEY THUNDER
- Sydney Thunder failed to live with the quality of an impressive performance by Melbourne Stars as they succumbed to defeat in their opening match of the latest edition of the Big Bash League.
- Despite being able to take regular wickets in the middle order, the top three did most of the damage for the Stars as they posted 169/8, although that did not look to be insurmountable for the Thunder.
- They made a strong start to their chase with Alex Hales and skipper Callum Ferguson putting on 69 for the second-wicket but when that pair fell, the wickets started to tumble and the Thunder could only manage 147/9 which resulted in a 22-run loss.
BRISBANE HEAT
- Brisbane Heat made a lacklustre start to their BBL|10 campaign and they look set for a disappointing tournament unless they make big improvements after they were soundly beaten by Melbourne Stars in their opener.
- The Heat stuttered to just 125 runs as they were bowled out by the Stars and despite starting their reply strongly by removing the dangerous Marcus Stoinis for a duck, they could not build on it.
- They did have the Stars at 34/3 but that was as good as it got as Hilton Cartwright and Glenn Maxwell combined to do the damage in the six-wicket loss and the Heat will need to be better with bat and ball in this clash.
THE PREDICTION
Both of these teams were defeated against Melbourne Stars last time out and whilst that may not be too big a concern in itself against a well-fancied outfit, the manner of the loss will be a worry for Brisbane Heat. They were outclassed with both bat and ball as they failed to build on some promising situations. Sydney Thunder on the other hand were by no means disgraced as they put up a valiant effort and put in a strong challenge which leaves them with something to build on. The two teams will be desperate to get off the mark here but based on what they showed in their respective opening matches, the Thunder have to be fancied in this one.
